Making your house cooler in summer and warmer on cold days can save money on energy bills.
This page looks at measures we can take to make our homes more energy efficient and save money.
What is an all electric home?
An electric home is one that has removed all fossil fuel based appliances (such as gas stoves and heaters) and cars (run on petrol or diesel) and instead has efficient electric appliances and cars powered on renewable energy.
Why should I make my home all electric?
Lower Bills - modern electric appliances are incredibly efficient. This means significant savings on energy bills.
Healthier Homes - unlike gas appliances, electric appliances don't produce any indoor pollutants or emissions, creating healthy homes for families.
Better Performance - modern electric appliances and vehicles have higher efficiency and power.
What can I do to go all electric in my home?
Space Heating: Replace gas heaters and get a reverse cycle air conditioner
Water Heating: Replace gas water heaters to a heat pump system
Cooking: Replace the gas stovetop to an electric induction cooktop
Vehicles: Replace your car with an EV electric vehicle (which you can charge at home)
Solar Panels: Install rooftop solar
Battery Storage: Add a home battery to store your rooftop solar energy so that you can use it day or night.
How do I choose the best electric appliance?
Appliances that we use in our homes, such as air conditioners, cooktops, water heaters or heat pumps, clothes dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, and televisions, must have an Energy Rating Label attached to it.
The Energy Rating Label helps you choose more energy efficient appliances to keep your costs down.
Energy Rating Labels must be displayed on appliances in shops.
If an Energy Rating Label has lots of stars, it means an appliance will use less energy — which means you save money on your energy bills. Click here to learn more

Energy efficiency and lowering energy bills
People who are renting can get free home energy assessments. The Home Energy Efficiency Program supports low-income households reduce the cost of their energy bills (electricity and gas).
Do an online self-assessment of the energy you use and how warm or cool your home is. At the end you get a report giving tips about what you can do.
If you own a home, this online tool works out how energy efficient your home is, what appliances you should use, and what you can do about it.
Getting off gas and lowering energy bills
Homes and buildings often use gas in heating, hot water and cooking. Getting off gas and going all electric can save money on energy bills.
